As the proud daughter of a feminist lesbian, I've had my share of marches and rally's. I've also had my political disagreements with my Mom and her partner. I do respect their opinions and appreciate the pride it instilled me as a girl growing up.
Here's the thing. As a parent, you want your children to understand what's politically important. So, you educate them on the plight of the GLBT community. You openly discuss the ways the government is expanding their minds and also descriminating against you. At the same time, your children are forming their own opinions and will have their own issues that they will stand for.
I know there are many people in the GLBT community who will be voting for Hillary Clinton because she's a woman. There is more to a candidate than female and male. When you are educating your children, remember that and specify why a female President would be a good thing. What does she stand for that is so good. What changes do you see happening if Hillary becomes President.
Same thing when sharing with your kids that you are voting for someone because they believe in gay rights or GLBT family values. Share what it MEANS.
Also, allow your kids to make their own decisions when it comes to politics. You have a reason to stand for your rights. Your children may not feel the same need to fight like you do. Honor that and allow them to sit out, if they choose to. Educate them on what's important to you and then allow them to make their own choices. Support them in their individuality!
Create a great day!
