Oregon

Not so fast: Federal judge blocks Oregon's domestic-partnership law. Conservative group continues to battle with our families.

An anti-gay-rights group didn't collect enough valid signatures on a referendum to block Oregon's domestic-partnership law, but it convinced a judge to freeze the legislation which was to take effect January 1.

The law would have given some spousal rights to gay couples.

State elections officials said this fall that the signature effort fell 116 valid signatures short of the 55,179 needed to suspend the law.

Kids and gay slurs. What are they saying? What do they really mean?

The word gay is used by both genders to mean "stupid". Anything can be gay. A video game can be gay. A car can be gay. But only a boy can be a fag.

Does that get your attention?

This is what C.J. Pascoe - author of Dude You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School - found during her 18-month observation in a California high school.

Oregon remains fair. The state joins eight others that have approved spousal rights for same-sex couples.

Oregon state election officials say opponents failed to turn in enough signatures to block the state's domestic-partnership law for same-sex couples.

Buzzkill From Likely Sources. Conservatives want to ruin our chance for equality in Oregon.

An organized group of social conservatives has been collecting petition signatures needed to block measures that will allow same-sex couples the same benefits as married straight couples, and protection against discrimination.

Leading the charge against gay rights in Oregon is former Republican Senator Marylin Shannon (shannon.sen@state.or.us or 503-986-1011 or 503-986-1715).

Oregon on my mind

Signs that read 'One Man, One Woman, Yes on 36' lined the gorgeous farmland of Marion County Oregon. Proposition 36 called for a vote to change Oregon's Constitution. The change replaced language which stated, "anyone over 18 can marry..." with, "a man and a woman over 18 can marry..." Mark and I noticed the irony of our situation as we drove our newborn daughter around Silverton, Salem, and Portland.

Oregon on my mind. I never gave the state much thought until our surrogate gave birth there.

The anti-gay signs were large, loud, and angry but our experience over a few days in this otherwise charming part of the country was free of negativity.
