Australian school looks to the Bible for answers

A school in Australia is in a hot spot after it asked its students whether being gay is “the sickest sin” in a home assignment. Experts agree discrimination through such teaching leads to mental health issues and even suicide. A question in a later assignment asked what God said about homosexuality and pointed to Bible quotes for the answer, which calls it an “abomination”. Blanket policies in Australian schools are needed about homophobia because, while the WA Equal Opportunity Act does not allow sexual-orientation discrimination, there are “loopholes” for religious institutions to include themselves in children’s education. One student’s relative, James Notman, said such “extremist” teachings could “seriously damage the mental well-being” of some children at a time of life when questions of sexuality were of huge importance.
