{"id":2969,"date":"2009-03-04T01:55:48","date_gmt":"2009-03-04T01:55:48","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2019-05-02T06:26:31","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T10:26:31","slug":"bill-would-ban-adoptions-by-unwed-couples-in-tennessee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/proudparenting.com\/2009\/03\/bill-would-ban-adoptions-by-unwed-couples-in-tennessee\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill would ban adoptions by unwed couples in Tennessee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If bills introduced in the Tennessee House and Senate this session succeed in the state\u2019s new, Republican-dominated legislature, unmarried couples \u2014 gay and straight \u2014 could be barred from adopting.<\/p>\n<p>People on both sides of the issue say their primary concern is the welfare of children. But that\u2019s where the agreement ends about who should and should not be able to adopt in Tennessee. Those who oppose the bills say they would leave more children lingering in a state system that has made strides since a court ordered Tennessee to more swiftly connect eligible children with adoptive families.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/article\/20090301\/NEWS01\/90301017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T&nbsp;<\/a>he first of several bills seeking to ban gay individuals and couples from adopting were introduced early this decade. In October 2007, the Tennessee attorney general issued an opinion that found no legal basis in Tennessee law for a ban on gay couples adopting.<\/p>\n<p>The new bills target unmarried couples without ever mentioning sexual orientation. The bills do include a reference to Tennessee\u2019s constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and a woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis statute \u2026 allows the sponsors to say, \u2018Well, we aren\u2019t targeting anybody,\u2019 \u201d said Chris Sanders, president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnep.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tennessee Equality Project<\/strong><\/a>, which works for equal treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If bills introduced in the Tennessee House and Senate this session succeed in the state\u2019s new, Republican-dominated legislature, unmarried couples<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":17,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[15],"tags":[333,794,674],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.3 -
