Victory for same-sex parents in Kansas! Lawmakers block attempt to discriminate based on religious beliefs

Adoption agencies in Kansas cannot stop same-sex couples from adopting on religious grounds. At the moment, same-sex couples can legally adopt in every U.S. state, but Republican senators are trying to pass laws in some states that will make it legal for adoption agencies to reject same-sex couples.

Senators approved the bill 28-12 Thursday after an intense debate the previous day over whether the legislation is discriminatory. The vote was 28-12.

But the House voted it down 58-64 just a few hours later. The bill now goes to a conference committee, where lawmakers from the House and the Senate will negotiate a final bill.

Sen. Barbara Rollier said the attempt to create a bill against same-sex couples is “sick discrimination.”
